Ginny on Frederick is pleased to present three new works by Daniel Sinsel, combining painting with assemblage.
All three works involve techniques, materials or motifs used in the past: weaving, painting or fingerprinting, linen tape, nuts, or glass roundels, a recorder and its player, a winding ribbon, irregularly shaped canvases and more recently stripes or arrows of coloured fields.
Untitled, 2023 depicts a silhouette of a man playing the recorder against a striped fading backdrop. In the foreground is a painted ledge with orange-red cut glass discs attached, reminiscent of a setting sun.
Untitled, 2023 is made up of a large colour field stripe painting with a smaller canvas mounted to it. The attached panel depicts winding ribbon against a fading sky and holds shards of coloured broken glass on its top edge.
Untitled, 2023 is a painting on a surface woven from linen tape hiding nutshells within its weave. Black nets holding carbonised nutshells and fruit stones are attached to either side.
Within his repertoire and stock of motifs, Sinsel defines their relationships in ever new combinations. He renders painterly illusion and playfully disrupts it with material additions in the form of low relief. Through appropriating materials and their use in new, awkward or queering gestures, he explores aspects of managing, and revealing, desire.
Daniel Sinsel (b. 1976, Munich) lives and works in London. He studied at the Royal College of Art (2004) and the Chelsea College of Art and Design (2002), both London. Sinsel has exhibited internationally and his work has been included in Thanks for the
