Anton Alvarez’s (b. 1980, Uppsala) practise focuses on the design of systems, the processes of producing sculptural objects, as well as the tension between traditional craftsmanship and technological innovation. Rich in tradition while at the same time extremely unconventional, his work challenges the viewer’s perception of design and sculpture. Alvarez has an MFA from the Royal College of Art in London (2012) and a BFA from Konstfack in Stockholm (2009). He has been exhibited at Larsen Warner (Stockholm, 2021), Korean International Ceramic Biennale (2019), Church San Bernardino alle Monache (Milan, 2019), New Art Centre (Roche Court, 2018), Salon 94 (New York, 2017), and National Centre for Craft and Design (UK, 2016) among others. Alvarez lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden.
Anastasia Bay’s (Paris, 1988) paintings depict human figures in a way that reminds of Minoan frescoes as much as of comic strips, mixing classical history with contemporary culture, and sports with literature in a rizhomic form of cross-pollination between references that makes her works uniquely striking and profoundly resonating at once. The works are often large in scale and her painting style is characterised by secure brushstrokes and rough drawing marks applied over colour field backgrounds with a synthetic approach and process leaving no space to the unnecessary and where, from the lines and traces left from the preparatory drawings, the pentimento, it is pure emotions and relations emerging. Bay graduated from the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and had shows at Galerie Derouillon (Paris, 2022), Anna Zorina Gallery (New York, 2022), Sorry We’re Closed (Brussels, 2021), White House Gallery (Lovenjoel, 2021), and Spurs Gallery (Beijing, 2020) among others. Bay lives and works in Brussels, Belgium.
Stevie Dix’s (b. 1990, Genk) oils on canvas are bold and gestural, composed in an essential style where simple objects and minimalistic compositions are elevated to symbols and metaphors for intimate feelings and, at times, political perspectives. She has been exhibited at The Journal Gallery’s Tennis Elbow (New York, 2022), L21 Gallery (Palma, 2021), Galerie Chloé Salgado (Paris, 2020), Steve Turner Gallery (Los Angeles, 2019), Keteleer Gallery (Antwerp, 2018), and The Cabin (Los Angeles, 2017) among others. Dix lives and works in Genk, Belgium.
Olivia Sterling’s (b. 1996, Peterborough) paintings critique racialised discourses in our contemporary through the depiction of everyday objects and settings. While Sterling’s slapstick style, vibrant colours, bold brushstrokes and cartoon-styled outlines seem to be cheerful at first glance, they serve the artist’s aim to unveil the underlying systemic racism, prejudice and everydayness of othering that pervade our society even in the most mundane activities. Graduating with an MA in painting from the Royal College of Art, Sterling was exhibited at Guts Gallery (London, 2022), NEVVEN (Gothenburg, 2022), CCA Goldsmiths (London, 2021), Cob Gallery (London, 2021), Galerie Droste (Paris, 2021), Blank Projects (Cape Town, 2020), White Cube (Online, 2020), UCA Farnham (Surrey, 2019), and RCA Battersea (London, 2018). Sterling lives and works in London, United Kingdom.
