In the Night We Believe is an online exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Francisco Rodriguez. Conceived for his now postponed exhibition at Chapter Gallery, Cardiff, the work explores the liminal space between the public and private realm.

The world that Francisco Rodriguez paints is one of magical realism, a hybrid of the fantastical and the everyday. His exhibition In the Night We Believe evokes a teenage bedroom and the familiar feeling of lying at night, imagining the world outside. Paintings resemble the adolescent posters of youth with their heroic figures and political graphics. Seasons change as if viewed from a window. Animals demarcate the interior and exterior space - roaming dogs belong to the outside, cats furtively navigating between the two. Isolated figures enact dream-like narratives, imagery that seems peculiarly resonant in these strange times of domestic confinement.

At a time like this we believe that creativity and community are more important than ever. Charitable arts spaces such as Chapter are reliant on donations and income from ticket sales to support their fantastic artistic programme and are struggling now to stay afloat. Chapter welcomes more than 700,000 members of the community through their doors every year, providing them with the opportunity to engage with and respond to an extensive gallery, theatre and cinema programme. They approach their 50th Birthday in 2021, and we would like to help them get there, 20% of the sale of these artworks will therefore go towards their fundraising efforts.

Francisco Rodríguez graduated with an MFA from the Slade School of Fine Arts in 2018 and was also included in Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2018 which launched at the Liverpool Biennial and travelled to the South London Gallery. He has since had a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Santiago and has appeared in numerous group shows in the UK and overseas, most recently as part of Gran Sur: Contemporary Chilean Art in the Engel Collection at Sala Alcalá 31, Madrid. His works are included in several public and private collections including the DLA Art Collection and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MAC), Chile. Rodríguez had his first solo exhibition in the UK at Cooke Latham Gallery in 2018.
