Ralph
Schuster works in various media and is especially known for his virtuoso
paintings with coloured pencils. His iconography feeds itself preferably from
everyday culture. In example, some of his recent sculptures, drawings and
paintings around the cigarette and the blue smoke. Next to them, there are
media and comic book heroes, animals, arms, eyes, teeth, vessels, etc.
His
paintings sometimes include works by other painters or quote advertising
freely. Together with their titles they result in very personal narratives,
which leave the viewer plenty of room for his or her loose associations. An
element of his multi-part installation "Chestfield" in our temporary
shop window in Bochum city centre is the neon sculpture "Two Years
Holidays", which we present to you as a new Provinz Edition. As a colourful and dynamic light drawing the
swinging 6 in many colour and size variations and emerges on the second glance
as a face with a quiff and scarf.
Ralph
Schuster was born 1982 in Freiburg im Breisgau, studied painting
with
Walter Dahn at the HBK Braunschweig and lives in Brussels.
He
received numerous awards, including project funding from Stiftung Kunstfonds
(2019), the Kunststiftung NRW (2018), the studio grant of the Kölnischer
Kunstverein (2015-2018), the annual scholarship of the state of Lower Saxony in
the field of art (2014) and the Förderpreis für Bildende Kunst of the Federal
Ministry of Education and research, ATLAS - KunststudentInnen stellen aus
(Bundeskunsthalle, Bonn, 2013). Ralph Schuster's works have been exhibited at
Linn Lühn Gallery, Düsseldorf (2018, 2017) at the Kölnischer Kunstverein
(2017), the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen (2016, 2015), the Philara Collection,
Düsseldorf (2014), at Sprüth Magers, Berlin (2013), the MAI 36 Gallery, Zurich
(2010) and in the Bonner Kunstverein (2010).
