Product Testing Unit is the first solo exhibition in Switzerland of Mexican artist Gabriel Kuri. For the exhibition at Gebert Foundation for Culture, Kuri presents a mix of existing and newly produced works, categorized under the principle of “product testing”. In the gestures and processes implied in all these sculptural exercises, we see traces of the assessment of physical properties such as weight, texture, flexibility, rigidity, transparency or the degree of human or technical intervention; as well as the ordering principles in the comparison, systematization and classification of the observations. Kuris works often take shape in the balancing of functional everyday objects and disposable materials or products, which become sculptures as display objects. In his works, these materials and products—their actual function, look and feel—serve as information media, whose usage also says something about the society that produces them. In the form of his sculptures, Kuri visualizes the various layers of information intrinsic and possible in the objects.

Gabriel Kuri was born in 1970 in Mexico City. He lives and works in Los Angeles and Brussels.
